Star Trek Tri-Dimensional Chess–any Star Trek fan remembers the classic episodes with games played between Captain Kirk and Spock. While rules were never established on the television series, Jens Meder has created tournament rules of play for the Star Trek Tri-Dimensional game. It is stressed that there may not be a rule involving every possible situation and arbiters should be able to use common sense, logic, experience, and study of former moves in order to pass a ruling in a game. Tri-Dimensional chess is played on a 3-D chessboard with white players beginning the game. The objective is the same as in any game of chess, to attack the king and close the door on any chances for the opponent to save him. The tri-dimensional game set up actually consists of three main boards with 4 smaller attack boards that are movable. The bottom board is “White’s Board,” the middle board is “Neutral’s Board,” and the top board is “Black’s Board.” Each player has sixteen pieces, the same as in conventional chess. It varies in placement of some pieces on the main boards and some pieces on the attack boards. Moves made in traditional chess are allowed in the game.
